Buying a round every time you get a round will bankrupt you in no time when drinking with the Irish.
You have to do it in proportion to the size of the round.

Basically if you get 3 free drinks you should also wind up buying 3. Now, that rule can be bent if you are actually done drinking and don't want anymore, but the guy buying wants the company. Plus I'm one of those super rich Americans everybody hears about so it would take the entire country to bankrupt me.

Maybe they knew you were... you know... a clog wearing Dutchman?
I heard most Americans are pretty friendly to tourists, as long as you're not being a total jackass. Yet when I see videos of, say, NYC, everybody seems like a total douche.
Chicago is that way (douchebags everywhere). I've never been to a city I hated more than Chicago. There's great stuff to look at and do or whatever, I just really don't like it, and it has a lot to do with the people up there.
Generally, in NYC, people are relatively important and have somewhere to be. The worst city is Boston, where people THINK they are important and have somewhere to be. New York is all about business...they have to get somewhere, and you are in the way so they just walk around. No time for pleasantries. Boston, on the other hand, has a sense of entitlement what with all the revolutionary war stuff like a million years ago.

Chicago, I've found, is just a big city with no feel at all...not so much douchebaggery, just a whole bunch of clueless people packed into one city.

Come to Pittsburgh, nicest city in the country.
The only decent thing about America is that Waffle House waitresses are the most cliched darlings on the planet. Love them.

Chicago, in all honesty, is the nicest American City I've visited... with the exception of Nashville. That includes New York, LA, San Fran, Boston, Louisville, Memphis, Kansas City, Iowa City, Des Moines, Atlanta, Orlando etc. etc. etc.

I really disagree. I thought Chicago people were fairly grounded. The City itself is also awesome. Beautiful architecture and clean as fuck. Would definitely visit again.
To be fair, I am very biased. Chicago holds all the power in Illinois. And yes, I'm bitter about it.
Illinois. Stupid silent s.
Ciaran: you only seen the good side of Chicago, then. And apparently avoided the successful black individuals that like to throw their trash everywhere. I haven't been there in years but never did like it.

I found New York to not be anywhere near as intimidating as movies played it up to be. The people were fine, in my opinion, but I avoided NY city. New Jersey, on the other hand, seems to be full of assholes and crazy drivers the second you cross the border.
Friendliest people I ever met were the Irish. They just keep buying you drinks, even if they've never met you and the beer is super expensive.
Americans overall are very friendly. New Yorkers probably get annoyed by the constant barrage of tourists.

I found the people there to be a bit more brusque, but they have shit to do. Get in, get out and do your business. No bullshiting around and walking around like a yokel.

If you go there, just be all like "yo bitch, this place used to be called New Amsterdam, so where my hookers at?"
I give New Yorkers a bit of a pass because 8 million fricking people live there.

Boston, however, has no excuse.
Yea maybe. But on the face of it, it was lovely.

We're lovely. But you're supposed to eventually buy a round. Eventually. Nobody is keeping tabs though.
Yeah, I did. They were friendly enough not to order fucking whiskey. I actually had a spanish dude pull that stunt once.

Don't really remember that much from my nights in Dublin for some reason.
Anyone who doesn't buy a round after receiving a round is a monster.

I travelled all over Europe and never really met a people more rude than the northern french. Down south they're a little nicer, but that's mostly because they get all their money from tourism.
