Well, with that said, I would like to congratulate Neffy for starting a thread which led to such a spirited yet civil conversation about a serious topic. I think I speak for both myself and Kevinsmith when I say this victory was hard-fought and hard-earned, but we'll go with it.

I'd also like to thank BMTH, BrittanyAnne, chalupa, and various Europeans for their contributions to this thread.

I'd also like to thank the people of Topeka, KS, for allowing us to film on location.

Thank you, everyone. Kevinsmith is going to Disney World, so keep your children under lock and key.

You were spanked as a teenager, Kevvy?

I was the kid who beat the shit out of my little brother when I was mad; because for a long time I was bigger than he was and I could easily hurt him to get him to go away when I was mad at him. I wonder where I learned that, couldn't have been the use of physical punishment by my pissed-off parents. You know what the consequence was? Smacks with a wooden spoon. Great idea, let's enforce the idea that hitting out of anger is wrong with more hitting.

If that weren't the scenario with practically anyone else I know, I may agree with you. Most people with with siblings have the same stories; my older sibling beat me up all the time/I beat up my younger sibling all the time, we'd be spanked as a result for fighting.

I resent the fact various Europeans don't even get mentioned by name.

With respect Dev, I'll go with the numerous scientific studies on the matter. It's pretty clear spanking is a bad thing
What are their studies based on? Observation. What are my opinions based on? Observation, not to mention my actual experience. But because I don't wear a white coat or have letters after my name, BMTH won't listen to me. I am a scientist, and you WILL appeal to my authoritah! :troll:

Yup.
Guess what. I'm not violent. I've actually never started a physical fight and was in only one, and that was defending myself. Never been in trouble with the law, didn't cause trouble. MAN that violence fucked me up hard! It MUST be the case, men in white coats said so! lol

And yes, once again I'm screwing around. But there is truth in what I say. Studies do say that spanking can cause problems, and I'm sure that with some kids it really can. Depends on the kids, the parents, how it's done and a few hundred other variables. I have a hard time placing all my faith in these studies though because again what I have seen with my own eyes, and not to mention the fact that studies are far from infallible as well. How many times have we seen studies on various subjects contracdict other studies. For example, I forget, are we allowed to eat eggs again or not? It seems every month one study says "THEY'RE BAD!" and then the next month "Eggs are good for you!" They're all run by humans, humans are fallible and as such, they aren't foolproof. Just good ideas to incorporate into the overall larger stream of information upon which we can base our stances.

I will say this: I have never had to spank my daughter, who is now almost 8. Other methods have worked. I have noticed, though, that taking away privileges sometimes have less of an effect than yelling at her sometimes. Doesn't make the same mistake again. Volume speaks volumes....

Now show me a study that says "yelling at kids bad, hurts self esteem. Instead, sit with them and talk to them about all their positives and what not. And wonder why they think you're dumber than fuck and keep doing the same shit."

You have only child syndrome, your argument is invalid because my post was about people with siblings.

I'm not violent either... Now, anyway. The only person I've been physically aggressive toward was my brother, outside of the few times the little man ended up with a swat. Maybe that has something to do with the fact that I'm now practically a dwarf, who knows. What I was saying is that the way I see it, my acts were reinforced behaviors. I dealt with my anger toward that poor kid by hurting him, because that's what I learned to do from my parents. "You don't do as you are told, and I will hurt you physically." Even if they never said it like that, this is the point that came across. I didn't hit the kid out of nowhere; in my eyes at the time, it was justified because he wouldn't do what I wanted him to. I always gave him warnings, he should have just listened; but because he didn't, I'd punch him in the arm a few times and give him a nice bruise.

Tonight!
I'm pretty sure I'll be able to avoid any spankings. As a kid the worst I ever had was the threat of the pancake turner. My plan is to be harsh when I need to about taking away toys and privileges. I know that when I was a kid taking away my nintendo or TV was way worse than a spanking would have been.

Which just goes to show why I said every situation, every kid is different. There are too many variables. I didn't look at it that way when I was a kid. I looked at it as "Shit, I better not do that, I don't feel like getting my ass hit." Other kids look at is as violence. Some kids, like Noc just said, getting their Nintento taken away meant a whole lot. Other kids didn't give a shit and knew that the consequence wasn't that big a deal if the act was fun enough. It all depends on a lot.

Would you admit nefarious is right already before I bring out my suppressed violent side caused directly by spanking?
